Project
Anti-burnout puzzle for academics
Project number: 2024-1-PL01-KA220-ADU-000246002
Project duration: 1st November 2024 – 31st October 2026
Objective
The main objective is to improve the psychophysical condition of academic teachers by developing effective tools to prevent professional burnout for this group.
The specific objectives that will be implemented are:
- Supporting the prevention of burnout of academics by developing a set of activities increasing resilience.
- Supporting the activities of the university in the area of preventing burnout of academics by developing a manual for university authorities
- International dissemination of solutions in target groups by developing recommendations for implementation and various activities promoting the project results.
Target groups
The project is dedicated to two main target groups:
01.

Academic teachers
The first and most important are academics who, due to the nature of their work, are exposed to professional burnout, and who, due to university conditions, cannot count on supportive activities from universities. Professional burnout mainly affects people with extensive professional experience - usually 50+, most often women (they are much less likely to be promoted, they feel unfulfilled, they often don't perform the required rigorous work, which ultimately leads to a change of position for a worse one). The research also indicates a group of the youngest people who are just starting work, but according to experts, this is not a case of burnout, but rather a disillusionment with ideas about a quick and impressive career. Experiences from previous projects have shown that for academics the subject of burnout is taboo, about which very little is said or not at all. This is mainly due to the requirements of this profession. You have to be tough and not show weakness, and burnout in this environment is treated as a sign of weakness. We plan to prepare a set of activities allowing for effective prevention of burnout. Through the use of elements of a stoic way of life and the skilful use of available opportunities to build resilience and mindfulness motivate them to self-development and to look for an effective, individual way of support.
02.

University decision-makers
The second group consists of university decision-makers (university or faculty authorities, heads of institutes), to whom we want to provide materials allowing for the diagnosis and effective forms of prevention of teacher burnout. We know from previous projects that the topic of teacher burnout is downplayed or disregarded by most university authorities. For this group, we plan to prepare a manual on the specifics of burnout among academics, along with suggestions for tools for initial diagnosis in others (how to recognize symptoms?). We will also prepare an overview of preventive measures.
International Partnership
The project was implemented in partnership of 4 institutions:
Co-Funded by the European Union. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the Foundation for the Development of the Education System (FRSE). Neither the European Union nor FRSE can be held responsible for them.
